The capital of Rio Grande do Norte is the city of Natal, in the eastern coast. Other important cities are Mocoro, about halfway between Natal and Fortaleza, and Parnamirim. Except for a narrow ribbon along the eastern coast, most of Rio Grande do Norte enjoys high temperatures and little rain.

Rio Grande do Norte is the Portuguese for "Long River of the North". Except for the eastern coast, the State of Rio Grande do Norte is in the dry zone, meaning that rains are scarce and irregular. This dry region reaches the Atlantic Ocean, and for this reason some cities, including the capital Natal, enjoy a landscape of dunes and sand hills.
